Getting Prints from a Pro Lab

So, you’ve gotten your photos taken, you’ve seen the proofs. You love them! But, geez, that photographer sure charges a lot more than Wal-Mart for some prints! You figure that you’ll buy the digital copies and get the prints yourself.

But, somehow, the image the photographer gave you:

Ended up like this:

Woah! What happened there?! No, this isn’t some trickery of the photographer (or some Photoshop magic on my part). Basic 1 hour print labs like Wal-Mart can charge so little because they do not use the highest quality inks, papers, or printers. Their prints can vary wildly from the original file and leave a gorgeous portrait of your children and family looking dull or dark.

img-split

In this 3-way split, I put a photo from Walgreens on the left and a photo from Wal-Mart on the right, with the photo from a professional lab in the middle. Walgreens is pinkish and washed out with not enough contrast. Wal-Mart is dark and turns the skin almost orange with far too much contrast.

When you invest in professional portraits, please consider investing in professional prints as well. The difference in quality can be staggering and when you’ve invested in a beautiful image, make sure it’s displayed to its fullest potential!
